United Way – Mumbai Disaster Response Fund
United Way in the UK is collecting money for the Mumbai
Disaster Response Fund which has been set up, by United Way of Mumbai, to help the victims of the recent terror attacks.
For 60 hours, beginning on the night of 26th November 2008, India and the world helplessly witnessed any nation’s worst nightmare come true. India’s 9/11 was played out in front of the world as coordinated attacks at 10 different locations in Mumbai, including at three iconic structures in the heart of the country’s financial capital. In the mindless carnage 195 lives were lost, including 22 foreigners and 17 security personnel and more than 300 were injured. While the numbers mentioned above are official figures, it is feared that they could actually increase manifold.
An appeal has been made to the global civil society to come forward with assistance for the United Way of Mumbai- Mumbai Disaster Response Fund to rehabilitate families of innocent victims of this mindless carnage. The fund will also activate Disaster Preparedness Programs at Local Ward Resource Centres at the civic ward level, involving all stakeholders of society - Civil defence staff, local communities, students, volunteers, local NGOs, police, civic authorities, hospitals and the fire brigade. Such centres have already been initiated in a few civic wards in Mumbai by United Way of Mumbai with good response.
